Chapter tWelve

Tulley sat at the table with Gaby trying to focus on their women’s studies project, but her mind was a million miles away. They had gotten together at four o’clock, and by the time it was past five, Tulley was almost useless. She knew Sue would be arriving home any time, and she wanted to get home to see her.

“What’s with you?” Gaby finally asked.

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve got the attention span of a gnat today. We need to get this done. You’re not having second thoughts about our project, are you?”Tulley was silent while she thought how best to answer the question. It wasn’t the project she was having second thoughts about. She just didn’t enjoy being around Gaby.

“I’m fine. It’s just Monday, you know. Who’s up for a project on Monday?” She tried to joke.

“Well, you seem a little distracted today. As long as you say you’re okay.”

The last thing Tulley planned on doing was telling Gaby about Sue. She was fairly certain Gaby’s feelings weren’t platonic, and she didn’t want to hurt her or encourage her to step up her game.

“I almost forgot.” Gaby reached into her hemp messenger bag.

“I saw something this weekend and had to get it for you.”

She handed a box to Tulley, who took it with trepidation.

“Go ahead. It won’t bite.” Gaby laughed.

Tulley opened the box, and there was a statue of two naked cherubs—one reclining on a leaf and the other feeding it grapes.

“It’s nothing big,” Gaby said. “Like I said, I saw it and thought of you.”

Tulley stared at the artwork and thought she’d never been so uncomfortable. She didn’t consider Gaby thinking of her when she saw two tiny naked babies was such a good thing.

“You know, because your folks have a vineyard and all.”

“It’s cute. Really. Thank you.” Tulley couldn’t imagine where Gaby might have been that she just happened to run into an artifact like that. “Where did you find it?”

Gaby said nothing for a moment and then answered, “I picked it up at Saturday Market. There are all kinds of artisans there. You never know what you’ll find.”

At that point, Tulley strongly felt the need to get home to Sue.

She didn’t want to spend another minute around Gaby. But Gaby seemed to have other ideas.

“I saw your friend at the bar the other night,” Gaby said.

Tulley had to stop and think. The past two days had seemed like an eternity with everything going on in her life. When had Sue been at the bar?

“It was Friday night,” she continued. “She was downing shots with some dark-haired buff woman.”

Tulley had to fight the jealousy boiling up inside her. She reminded herself that was the night she had walked away from Sue.

She knew she’d been at the bar. Her life with Sue officially began the next day. She had no reason to be angry.

“She didn’t mention seeing you,” Tulley said, trying to play it cool. “Did you have a good time?”

“I did, but not as much fun as it looked like your friend was having.
